What are your thoughts on the book so far? I’m very pleasantly surprised by how effortless of a read it is and I’m really enjoying Kundera’s writing style. That’s a big part of why I chose to start the book club with this book — it’s a good springboard to get back into reading, since I feel pretty rusty right now!
I will spare myself the 30 pounds of going to London and you the 30 min I would take to tell each of you how I detest this book with the heat of a thousand suns. There are two types of male authors: men who create female characters to fulfill their own fantasies and men who know better. Milan Kundera is unabashedly the former, and no amount of philosophical references can fill the void in his female characters and his pathetic life. This book doesn’t pass the Bechdel test or whichever measure of personhood a story gives to its female characters. They are, put simply, people who are either desired by the male characters, people who desire the male characters, or both. His writing is an uninspiring flow of consciousness from one self-entitled fuck boy to the next, and how the women they fuck think of them. If it were not the case that I am reading using my laptop, I would have thrown this book out the window more than a dozen times for the amount of my life it wasted.
