Our small group of volunteers spent the day unpacking and packing surplus fruits and vegetables at City Harvest’s Acton headquarters, which will then be transported by City Harvest vans across London.
The day started at 8:30am and ended at 3pm, with a 1-hour break for lunch at 12pm. It was a beautiful day, so we bought wraps at a nearby deli and then headed to Acton Park to soak up the sunshine. We got to blast our own music as we all worked together (there was an eclectic mix of house music and Harry Styles) and it was an incredibly fun and fulfilling day for all of us. At the end of the day, we even got to fill a tote bag with pantry staples or fresh produce from the City Harvest tuck shop to bring home with us.
About City Harvest
City Harvest are a food charity that reduces food poverty and protects the planet. They rescue nutritious surplus food–which is often otherwise wasted–from farms, manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers. They then deliver this food, for free, to over 130,000 people a week, providing life-changing support to communities across London.

Our impact
Impact report from our day volunteering, provided by City Harvest:

As part of HandsOn London’s BrightenUp London conservation campaign, our volunteers spent the day helping out at a community garden in Streatham.
We arrived at 11am and were introduced to Michael, from HandsOn London, and Martin, one of the locals living nearby. They told us a bit about the garden, and we all got to work digging out weeds and nettles that had taken over the planting beds. It was a beautiful, sunny day, and our work for the next few hours included the construction and repair of planting benches, the clearing of invasive plants from the orchard, the planting of fruits and vegetables and other tasks that help the garden thrive.
